The Rev. John Davenport was born in Coventry, England in 1597. For over 170 years it was believed that he was descended from the Henbury branch via Christopher Davenport who born about 1482. However, the link between Rev John’s grandfather Edward (1504-1589), of Coventry, and Christopher has never been found. We now believe, based on the Y-DNA of his descendants, that he is not part of the Henbury branch after all. Additional information will be displayed soon.
The Rev John left his homeland due to a dispute with the church and arrived in Salem, Massachusetts aboard the Hector in 1637. He was one of the founders of New Haven, Connecticut. He married Elizabeth Wooley and had a son John. The Rev. John Davenport died in Boston, Massachusetts in 1670. Many of John’s descendants settled in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York.
The Rev John Line is one of four Davenport lines that have been determined, by Y-DNA testing, to descend from the ancient Davenport line of Cheshire, England.
