How Much Does it Cost?
We use many tools in the pursuit of our ancestors. Among them are birth and death certificates, land titles, microfilm, books, copies, software, and even professional researchers. Plus, if you’re serious, you could add travel, food, and motel stays. The expenses can add up. But now, by using another tool – DNA testing – in a few weeks time, you may be able to learn which line you belong to, confirm your family line, or even discover you’ve been tracing the wrong line, for the price of a weekend research road trip.
Below is a list of the Y-DNA tests the Davenport DNA Project supports. Which test to order depends on what you want to accomplish. Generally, the 37 marker test is recommended as a good starting point. A test with fewer markers can always be upgraded at a later date, using the same sample.
Specimen collection kits, which involve a painless swabbing of inside the cheek to collect DNA cells, will be sent to participants directly from the lab. Your payment can be made by credit card or PayPal at the time the kit is ordered or may be remitted to the lab with the completed kit.
Looking for better prices? Several times a year, FTDNA will typically have a sale of their various DNA products. Most sales are about two weeks long, some even longer. So, there are plenty of opportunities for you to take advantage of the discounts. Watch for the DNA Day sale around April 25. Mother’s Day sale in May. Father’s Day sale in June. The Summer Sale in August. Black Friday Sale around the USA Thanksgiving in November, and finally the Holiday Sale throughout most of December.
Which Test to Order
37 Marker (Uses STR Y-DNA)
The 37 marker test can help place you into an existing tested Davenport line, and possibly even into a specific branch. If you are a Davenport with uncertain ancestry, then this would be the place to start.
111 Marker (Uses STR Y-DNA)
If you already believe you know which Davenport line you belong to then the 111 marker test can not only help verify it, but it may also narrow your search down to a specific branch.
Big-Y 700 (Uses STR and SNP Y-DNA)
The Big-Y 700 test is the ultimate in Y-DNA testing. It uses about 700 STR Y-DNA and looks at about a half million SNP’s. Normally this is not the test to take if you just want to know which Davenport line you belong to. However, it has been a vital tool in our English Davenport research. We have been able to determine the Y-DNA “signature” of the various English branches of the antient Cheshire line, plus figuring out where some of the American lines fit in. Contact the Project administrator to help decide if this is the test for you.

Testing Lab
Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) was originally affiliated with Dr. Michael Hammer and the University of Arizona, which did the original testing of the Y-chromosome for genetic matches between males. Now FTDNA uses it’s own Genomics Research Center. Results are placed in FTDNA’s Y-DNA database and when 2 people show the same identical results, the lab will inform both parties (provided both signed the FTDNA Release Form). Project participants will receive a certificate and report from the lab generally describing Y-DNA sequencing and the meaning of the probability between matches.

The Davenport Surname DNA Project organizers have no commercial affiliation with any profit making organization and receive no compensation for services or expenses involved with the project. At present, this webpage is maintained for posting DNA results of participants who choose to make their information available.
Although the Davenport Project has arranged for discounts at FTDNA, that by no means suggests a business partnership or other relationship between the Project and the Laboratory. All funds are payable only and directly to the testing company. The Davenport Project will not be the recipient nor steward of any DNA samples and has no responsibility for their care, handling or return to participant, nor duty to act on behalf of Participant in mediation of any dispute between the Participant and the testing company.
While a match between two participants may indicate that they share a common male ancestor, it will not identify the specific ancestor and there is no guarantee that every participant will match another participant.
By participation in the project, the participant agrees to all conditions of the Project.
