We use many tools in the pursuit of our ancestors. Among them are birth and death certificates, land titles, microfilm, books, copies, software, and even professional researchers. Plus if you're serious, you could add travel, food, and motel stays. The expenses can add up. But now, by using another tool - DNA testing - in a few weeks time, you may be able to learn which line you belong to, confirm your family line, or even discover you've been tracing the wrong line, for the price of a weekend research road trip.
Below is a list of the Y-DNA tests the Davenport DNA Project supports. Which test to order depends on what you want to accomplish. Generally, the 37 marker test is recommended. A test with fewer markers can always be upgraded at a later date, using the same sample.
Specimen collection kits, which involve a painless swabbing of inside the cheek to collect DNA cells, will be sent to participants directly from the lab. Your payment can be made by credit card or PayPal at the time the kit is ordered or may be remitted to the lab with the completed kit.
Which Test to Order
The 12 marker test is good for eliminating potential family lines. For example, there may have been a name change in your line and you believe you are a Newberry Davenport instead of a Smith. The first 12 markers could show that you do not match the Newberry Davenports. The 12 marker test is not very good at verifying a connection.
|The 25 marker test is a good starting point. It can give you a pretty good idea whether you are or are not related to another Davenport line. However, some Haplotypes (DNA patterns) are more common than others, so you may receive some "false matches".|
37 Marker - Recommended
|The 37 marker test can help place you into an existing tested Davenport line, and possibly even into a specific branch. If you are a Davenport with uncertain ancestry, then this would be the place to start|
67 Marker & 111 Marker
If you already believe you know which Davenport line you belong to then the 67 or 111 marker tests can not only help verify it, but it may also narrow your search down to a specific branch.
